| Term | Definition |
| .html | A file extension that indicates a file is written in HTML and may be viewed with a web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer). |
| .jtk | A file extension that indicates a file is a Job Ticket and is viewed with the Job Ticket Viewer. |
| ASCII | Text files that can be read by any computer or platform. |
| Address Book | A list of Sites to which a Site is allowed to ship packages. To set up your Address Book, please see Setting Up the Address Book for a WAM!NETŪ Internet GatewaySM Account. |
| Baud Rate | The speed of a modem, measured in bps (bytes per second). |
| Bin-Hex | An encrypted file type (with an .hqx file extension), generally used to protect Macintosh files being sent over the Internet. |
| Browser | A program that allows you to explore the Internet. Some popular browsers are Netscape, AOL, and Internet Explorer. |
| Certificates | A digital certificate is the electronic equivalent of a driver's license, passport or membership card, ensuring that the company who possesses a certificate is an authenticated company - thus retaining the highest level of security. |
| Compression | Reducing the size of a file with a compression package, such as StuffIt Deluxe or Drop Stuff. |
| Cross-Platform | Sharing files over computer platforms (Macintosh, Windows 95, Windows NT, or UNIX), or referring to file types that can be read on either a Mac or a PC (.gif, .htm, .jpg, etc.). |
| Directory Search | A feature of the Info Center that allows you to search for other members and establish trading permissions with them. See Using Directory Search for more information. |
| Directory Services | A feature of the Info Center that allows you to establish trading permissions, request trading permissions, view WAM!NETŪ Content StudioSM Libraries and publish your site to other Sites. |
| Download | To copy a file from a remote location (another computer, the Internet, etc.) to your local machine. |
| A method of sending messages and/or files electronically. | |
| File | A collection of data (words, numbers, graphics, etc.) generated by a specific software package. |
| File Extension | A three (plus) letter extension after a filename that indicates the type of file and possibly the program that created the file. |
| Filename | The name of a file, which is either given by you or automatically assigned. |
| File Type | Similar to a File Extension, a label on the file detailing its type. |
| Firewall | A combination of hardware and software that separates a LAN (local area network) into two or more parts (and/or from the outside world) for security purposes. |
| Folder | A group of files. Folders, or Directories, are useful for organizing files on your computer. |
| FTP | (File Transfer Protocol) A method of transporting files directly from one computer to another. |
| GUI | (Graphical User Interface) The buttons, bars and scrolls that appear as pictures on the computer screen and, when used with a mouse or keyboard, allow a user to easily select functions (as opposed to using complicated text command lines at a prompt). |
| Host | A term for an account that hosts (pays for) other accounts. For example, a Purple Box Site that hosts various Internet Gateway Accounts. |
| Hot Folders | A system of folders on your desktop that allow exchange with other Sites. For more information on creating Hot Folders, see Managing Hot Folders. |
| HTML | (Hypertext Markup Language) The language used to format web pages. |
| Info Center | The web-based software application used by customers to access the database for Tracking Packages, Working with Permissions, Using Directory Search, Managing Hot Folders and accessing Invoices . For more detailed information, see What is the Info Center? |
| Internet Gateway | A website that allows users to ship or receive files from the Internet to Purple Boxes, other Internet Gateway accounts, e-mail addresses, and FTP sites. For more information, see the Internet Gateway Online Help System at http://internetgateway.wamnet.com. |
| Internet Gateway Account | An account on the Internet Gateway created for a specific user. For more information, see Creating or Editing Internet Gateway Accounts. |
| IP Address | The unique numerical ID of a computer. |
| Internet Explorer | An internet browser. Recent versions can be downloaded: Internet Explorer. |
| Java | Java is a network-oriented programming language invented by Sun Microsystems that is specifically designed for writing programs that can be downloaded to your computer through the Internet and immediately run without fear of viruses or other harm to your computer or files. Using small Java programs (called "Applets"), web pages can include functions such as animations, calculators, and other fancy tricks. |
| Java Applet | A small Java program that can be embedded in an HTML page. Applets differ from full-fledged Java applications in that they are not allowed to access certain resources on the local computer, such as files and serial devices (modems, printers, etc.), and are prohibited from communicating with most other computers across a network. The current rule is that an applet can only make an Internet connection to the computer from which the applet was sent. |
| JavaScript | A scripting language, used with HTML, to enhance web pages. |
| Job Ticket | An electronic version of any paper form which looks identical on shipping and receiving ends. For more information on Job Tickets, see the Internet Gateway Online Help System at http://internetgateway.wamnet.com. |
| Job Ticket Viewer | A program that allows you to view Job Tickets. To download Job Ticket viewers, see the Internet Gateway Online Help System. |
| LAN | (Local Area Network) A system of network software and hardware components used to connect a group of individual user stations by means of a wire cable or fiber-optic link. A single LAN segment connection from one to several hundred individual user stations, usually in the same building. |
| MacBinary | An encrypted file type (with a .bin file extension), generally used to protect Macintosh files being sent over the Internet. |
| MB | (megabyte) A unit of measure for file size which is calculated as one million bytes. |
| Netscape | An internet browser. Recent versions can be downloaded: Netscape. |
| Operating System | Computer software that is responsible for controlling the allocation and use of hardware resources and the execution of application programs. Examples of Operating Systems include: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Macintosh OS or Unix. |
| Package | A shipment containing one or more files and/or a Job Ticket. |
| Package ID | A number assigned to each package that is shipped through the Internet Gateway. For more information, see Tracking Packages. |
| Packing List | A list of all files included in a shipment. |
| Password | A secret word that allows you to access your Info Center account. If you forget your password, please contact support.wamnet.com. |
| Permissions | Defines the trading status between your Site and other Sites. For more information, please see Working with Permissions. |
| Platform | A type of computer and/or Operating System. Examples of platforms include Macintosh, Windows, Windows NT, UNIX, etc. |
| Plug-In | A (usually small) piece of software that adds features to a larger piece of software. |
| Publishing | The option of making your Site viewable by other members in the Directory Search. |
| Purple Box | (Network Access Device) The purple box that acts as a gateway for the high-speed, electronic delivery of digital files for SAVVIS' Content Exchange Service. |
| Screen Resolution | The resolution of a monitor - namely the width and the height, in pixels. |
| Site | A single addressable location in the SAVVIS Content Exchange. Packages are always routed to a site. You will find a specific site in the Directory Search by entering the Site name in the Site Name field. |
| Site ID | A 4-6 digit number specific to each site. |
| SSL | Secure Socket Layer. A different protocol that is used to securely transfer information from a web server to a browser. |
| Text File | A simple file type, which consists mainly of letters and numbers (without formatting, etc.), which allows it to be easily transferred among platforms and between software packages. |
| Upload | To copy a file from your machine to a remote location. |
| Username | A unique name that will allow you to log on to your Info Center account. If you forget your Username, please contact support.wamnet.com. |
| Content Studio | The WAM!NETŪ Content StudioSM service is a shared graphics database. It allows everyone on your team to archive, store, and retrieve all your digital files from one secure, centralized database with your connection. |
| WAM!NET® PROOF | WAM!NETŪ PROOFSM is a remote digital proofing solution. |
| WorkSpace | WAM!NETŪ WorkSpaceSM is an interactive storage service. |
